Ecúmene, Imperio y Sofística

Abstract

[ES] La ecúmene es un concepto griego que las clases dirigentes romanas asumieron como explicación y proyecto de su propia acción imperial. No obstante, la voluntad de hacer coincidir los dominios de Roma con la tierra habitada se mostraba irrealizable. Las campañas de Trajano pretendieron conseguir la plena identidad entre Imperio y ecúmene. La conquista del Oriente supuso la reivindicación del legado de Alejandro, pero su fracaso obligó a Adriano y a las oligarquías griegas a redefinir su propia identidad. En aquel entonces se rechazó el legado del mundo helenístico y se eligió una identidad griega fundada en el pasado clásico. De esta forma se conseguía la identidad entre Imperio y cultura griega, a la que se la consideró la mejor parte de la ecúmene.

[EN] Oikouméne was originally a Greek concept, later adopted by the Roman elites as a way to justify and even to design their imperialistic plans. However, the Roman wish to make the limits of empire coincide with those of the inhabited world seemed unattainable. Trajan’s campaigns were indeed an attempt to identify empire and oikouméne. His conquest of the East was a way to vindicate Alexander’s legacy. After its failure, Hadrian and the Greek elites were compelled to redefine their own identity. From then on, Hellenistic legacy was rejected and Greek identity came to base on the Classical past. This choice also made possible to identify empire and Greek culture, which was considered as the best part of oikouméne.
