Female Characters in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: A Text Within the Text

Abstract

[ES]Este artículo analiza tres pasajes de la novela de Joyce “Retrato del artista adolescente”, desde la perspectiva que ofrece la lingüística, aunque en última instancia, el análisis supera este marco para ofrecer una interpretación literaria de los datos discutidos. El argumento central es un encuentro con personajes femeninos, aunque ocurren en diferentes capítulos, son diseñados y marcados por el autor como una unidad textual, un subtexto dentro del texto de la novela.

[EN]This paper examines three passages in Joyce´s novel A Portrait of the artist As a Young Man from the perspective afforded by test lingüistics, although ther analysis ultimately surpasses this frame to offer a literaty interpretation of the lingüistics data discussed. The central contention of the paper is that the three episodes which involve Stephen´s encounter with female characters , although occurring in different chapters of the books are designed and marked by the author as a textual unit, a subtext within the large text of the novel.
