Satire on Learning and the Type of the Pedant in Eighteenth-Century Literature

Abstract

[ES]En el documento se describe una serie de obras del siglo 18 que pueden incluirse en un género a veces se denomina "la sátira sobre el aprendizaje, y, más concretamente, que cuentan con un tipo determinado de caracteres, la pedante. El género no ha recibido mucha atención de la crítica, para que el papel simplemente intento de construir un corpus de obras que la integración de género-que, con suerte, puede ser ampliada por la investigación posterior y las contribuciones al tema, mediante el establecimiento de una serie de enlaces entre ellos. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea, en este trabajo se centran en la existencia de Inglés, francés y español las obras que dan testimonio de la dimensión europea del género y una concepción compartida crítica del aprendizaje como la pedantería. A continuación, dibujar un retrato compuesto de la figura central, el virtuoso pedante (también llamada, aprendió ingenio, tonto erudito), que da unidad a las propias obras y el género en su conjunto. Por último, se sugieren líneas de investigación que pueden convertir el tema interesante y fructífero.

[EN]The paper discusses a series of 18th-century works which may be included in a genre sometimes referred to as ‘satire on learning’, and, more specifically, which feature a particular character type—the pedant. The genre has not received much critical attention, so the paper will simply attempt to build a corpus of works integrating that genre—which, hopefully, may be expanded by later research and contributions to the topic—by establishing a series of links among them. In carrying out this task, this paper will focus on the existence of English, French and Spanish works which testify to the European dimension of the genre and to a shared critical conception of learning as pedantry. It will then draw a composite portrait of the central figure, the pedant (also called virtuoso, learned wit, erudite dunce), who gives unity to the works themselves and to the genre as a whole. It will finally suggest lines of research which may render the topic interesting and fruitful.
