Abstract

[ES] Yesterday es una película que transmite una gran fuerza espiritual, en contraste con los imponentes paisajes sudafricanos que rodean las duras condiciones de vida de sus habitantes. La realidad social que viven los sudafricanos ha sido plasmada en esta película de la mano del director y guionista Darrell James Roodt cuyo punto de vista occidental gira en torno a la crítica y a la conciencia social. En esta entrega, el director refleja, fehacientemente, las dificultades a las que se enfrentan las mujeres sudafricanas representadas en el personaje de Yesterday, madre de Beauty. La película se desarrolla en el ambiente rural donde las mujeres asumen los roles de madre y padre, ya que la gran mayoría de adultos jóvenes emigra hacia los núcleos urbanos (en el caso de la película, el marido de Yesterday se va a trabajar a Johannesburgo) en busca de mejores oportunidades laborales que permitan asegurar el sustento familiar. En este contexto, Darrell James realza las características sociales, económicas y religiosas propias de la sociedad africana, para que el espectador comprenda qué factores inciden en el desarrollo de la enfermedad por VIH en los países del Tercer Mundo. La sociedad en la que se desarrolla la película es una sociedad estigmatizada por el virus del VIH como consecuencia de la gran lacra social que se deriva de esta enfermedad, en la que 33 millones de personas viven con el VIH en todo el mundo y, al año, supone la muerte de 2 millones siendo la población sudafricana una de las más afectadas por este virus.

[EN] Yesterday is a film that transmits great spiritual force, in contrast with the awesome South African landscapes that surround the harsh living conditions of their inhabitants. The social reality of South Africans has been captured in this film by the director and scriptwriter Darrell James Roodt, whose Western point of view evolves around social criticism and awareness. In this part, the director reliably reflects the difficulties faced by South African women, who are represented by the character of Yesterday, Beauty’s mother. The plot takes place in the country, where women take up the role of both mother and father, since the vast majority of the young men emigrate to cities (in the film, Yesterday’s husband goes to find work in Johannesburg) in search of better job opportunities that will allow the family economy to be maintained. Within this context, Darrell James highlights the social, economic and religious features that are characteristic of African societies, so that viewers can understand which factors influence the development of HIV-related illnesses in Third World countries. The society within which the action develops is one that is stigmatized by HIV as a consequence of the huge social blemish caused by the disease. Thirty-three million people in the world suffer from HIV and this means the death of two million a year, the South Africanpopulation being one of those most affected by the virus.
