Nación, patria y patriotismo en los orígenes del nacionalismo español

Abstract

RESUMEN: A lo largo del siglo XVIII se observa en España una mutación trascendental en el significado político y en la mentalidad social que le sirve de soporte, de conceptos como patria, nación o nacional. Siguiendo los avatares de este cambio se analiza en este artículo el nuevo tipo de comunidad nacional que se desea promover, así como el papel nuclear que juega el Estado en la creación de la nación moderna. Emulando el paradigma newtoniano, los burócratas, sirviéndose de las todavía débiles palancas del aparato estatal, llevarán a cabo una profunda obra de unificación nacional que abarcó el territorio, las costumbres, las lenguas, los fueros e incluso la historia. Definidas las categorías espacio-temporales de la nación sólo quedaba ya afirmarla en la práctica como sujeto del poder constituyente. Esa será la tarea cumplida, sobre todo, después de la apertura de las Cortes de Cádiz. ABSTRACT: Throughout the 18th century in Spain, a transcendental change was observed in the political meaning of concepts such as native land, nation or national and in the social mentality this meaning was bases on. By following the fluctuations in this change, this article analyzes a new type of national community, the promotion of which was desirable, and the central role played by the State in the creation of the modern nation. Emulating the Newtonian paradigm, the bureaucrats, using what were still the weak levers of the state apparatus, carried out a profound work of national unification that covered the territory, customs, languages, regional jurisdictions and even history. Once the spatial-temporal categories of the nation were defined the only thing left to do was affirm it in practice as the subject of the constituting power. This task was to be fulfilled specially after the opening of the Cortes of Cádiz.
