«Hermanos o extranjeros»: la postura de ABC ante el nacionalismo catalán durante la Segunda República

Abstract

[ES] Conocer y explicar las claves del nacionalismo español que caracterizó la concepción política del diario ABC a lo largo del quinquenio republicano así como la elaboración y formulación del discurso que, como canal de trasmisión de ese nacionalismo y exponente de una peculiar lectura del nuevo régimen, sirvió para defender las posiciones propias y combatir la de sus adversarios ante la opinión pública constituye el objeto de este trabajo. En él se aborda, pues, la postura del diario monárquico frente a los hechos fundamentales que configuraron «la cuestión catalana» -especialmente, la elaboración y aprobación del Estatuto para Cataluña y su suspensión tras los sucesos de octubre de 1934-, y la evolución que sufrió aquélla en las distintas etapas republicanas. A su través se dibujará con nitidez la frontal oposición de ABC tanto hacia el nacionalismo catalán como hacia el reformismo republicano y la solución prevista por éste al problema regional. ABSTRACT: The objective of this article is to learn and explain the keys of Spanish nationalism that characterized the political conception of the newspaper ABC throughout the five years of the Republic, as well as the elaboration and formulation of the discourse, which, as the channel for transmission of that nationalism and exponent of a peculiar reading of the new regime, served to defend its own positions and to combat those of its adversaries in the arena of public opinión. This work thus approaches the position taken by the monarchist daily with regard to the fundamental facts making up the «Catalonian Question» -specially the elaboration and approval of the Estatuto for Catalonia and its suspensión after the events of October, 1934- and the evolution it underwent in the different stages of the Republic. A clear picture is drawn of the strong opposition of ABC to both Catalonian nationalism and republican reformism, and of the solution it favoured for the regional problem.
