Anarquismo y protestantismo. Reflexiones sobre un viejo argumento

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este artículo analiza las conexiones entre anarquismo y protestantismo en la España contemporánea tomando como punto de partida los paralelismos establecidos por Gerald Brenan entre el furor anticlerical del campesinado anarquista andaluz y los agitadores protestantes de los siglos XVI y XVII. El autor discute que en la base de la difusión del anarquismo se encontrara algún "sentimiento de traición" a los humildes cometida por la Iglesia al aliarse con los ricos, pues el anticlericalismo anarquista partía de una concepción que pretendía la inutilidad e incluso la nocividad de la religión misma. También niega que los sentimientos anticlericales del campesinado y las clases populares filoanarquistas se inspirasen en textos evangélicos, conocidos merced a la difusión de ediciones baratas por las sociedades bíblicas. No obstante, reconoce que la simpatía o el interés por el protestantismo fue una etapa en la evolución personal que llevó al anarquismo a algunos de los primeros partidarios de la A.I.T. en España. ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the connections between anarchism and protestantism in contemporary Spain, taking as a starting point the parallelisms established by Gerald Brenan between the anticlerical rage of the Andalusian anarchist peasants and the protestant agitators of the l6th and 17th centuries. The author questions whether at the base of the diffusion of anarchism there was some "sense of betrayal" on the part of the poor with regard to the Church when it aligned itself with the rich, since anarchist anticlericalism was based on the conception that religión itself was useless and even harmful. He also denies that anticlerical feeling among the anarchist peasants and working classes was inspired by evangelical texts, which became known to them through the diffusion of cheap editions by Bible societies. He does, however, admit that sympathy or interest in protestantism was a stage in the personal development of some of the first supporters of the International in Spain.
