Inmigrantes castellanos-leonenses en la ría de Bilbao en la primera industrialización

Abstract

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo tiene como objeto central analizar la inmigración de origen castellano-leonés sobre la que se asienta el proceso de industrialización y los cambios urbanísticos que transforman la Ría de Bilbao en el último cuarto del siglo xix. Esta inmigración no sólo contribuirá al notable crecimiento económico de la zona minera, la zona fabril media de la Ría y el propio Bilbao, sino que modificará profundamente las estructuras demográficas de estas zonas. Metodológicamente, el trabajo se fundamenta en el estudio de una extensa muestra de personas pertenecientes a once municipios seleccionados, distribuyendo la población según su origen, sexo y edad y desentrañando las causas y modalidades del desplazamiento, los lugares de concentración, las redes de solidaridad creadas y las características de la actividad productiva desarrollada. ABSTRACT: The central aim of this article is to analyse immigration to Bilbao from Castile-Leon, which the process of industrialization there was built upon, and the urban changes that transformed the Estuary of Bilbao in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This immigration not only contributed to the notable economic growth of the mining area, the manufacturing area between the estuary and Bilbao itself, but it also deeply modified the demographic structures of these areas. Methodologically, the work is based on the study of an extensive sample of persons from eleven selected municipalities, distributed according to origin, sex and age, with a view to finding out the causes and types of movement, places of concentration, the networks of solidarity that were created and the characteristics of the productive activity carried out.
