http://hdl.handle.net/10366/128019
[EN] Gioseffo Zarlino reflects on the musical innovations of his time within the humanist sphere turning to the ancient Greek philosophy in order to give a rational foundation to the musical theory. Nevertheless, he also considers other traditions of the past: Greek mythology, Greek-Latin literature, biblical tradition, Christian tradition. All these lines converge in Zarlino's thinking, without the aim of organizing those different contributions in a logical way, but with an instrumental purpose: choosing those ideas and concepts which enable him to pose a theory in order to ground the contemporary musical transformations.
The analysis will be focused on a selection of chapters of the first part of Istitutioni harmoniche (1589), where the confluence of traditions can be appreciated. Zarlino juxtaposes the attempt to find a rational foundation of the musical theory with mythical references from Greek-Latin antiquity and Jewish-Christian religious considerations. The concept of musica mundana, which proceeds from Pythagorean tradition, becomes the core of the argumentation. After that, both the manifestation of these duality of traditions in the pictorial representation of music and the scenic-musical configuration of Zarlino's aesthetic-philosophical conception of music in Giovanni de’ Bardi's Intermezzi (1589) will be examined.

2014-01-01T00:00:00ZGiacomo Leopardi y el viaje hacia la nada. Una breve introducción filosófica
http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127942
[EN] Giacomo Leopardi, Italian poet and philosopher of the early 19th century, elaborated an image of the world blending nihilism and titanism to respond to the fundamental question on the meaning of the existence. A philosophical doubt expressing at the same time both a metaphysical, ethical and esthetical concern. In Leopardi’s materialist world, there is no more transcendent sense of the existence and every being is explained in terms of its own existence. The ethical dimension acquires ontological shades and, like in Anaximander’s universe, the continuous repetition of ephemeral forms entail a kind of ontological sin deriving from individuation: fault has not transcendent sense, while it is implied by the same birth, by the same existence.
With the indifference of this dynamics collides the system of values of the human being, who loses his hierarchical coordinates and the same meaning of his existence, sunk in the nothing of a being already with no reason, burdened with the mechanics of a world without god, where not even the beauty of art redeems. From here, a deep sense of the tragic arises, to which the only possible answer is a titanic gesture, a rebellious provocation.

http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127941
[EN] In this series of articles, I intend to present and discuss the development of the ideas of the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset about literary criticism, conceived as an intellectual activity of particular philosophical interest. The importance that literature assumes in Ortegan thought and style is already a subject thoroughly discussed; the study of his work as a literary critic and his views on literary criticism is also not a novel issue; so my proposal is not simply to repeat the paths of works already well done, but to present, from a critical reading of the works of Ortega, a particular view about the development --at different times of his intellectual career-- of his conceptions of the activity of the critic, with the intention to discuss the timeliness and relevance of the ideas of the philosopher for contemporary literary debate.

2014-01-01T00:00:00ZRecent Advances in Metaphysics: Ontological Categories and Categorial Schemes
http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127762
[EN] From a traditional ontological perspective, and with the declared intention to move away from contemporary relativism, this paper aims to establish some basic principles to maintain the position of Metaphysics as the systematic study of reality as a whole, and Ontology as the science of being, based on a theory of categories. These categories are differentiated by the distinctive features of existence and identity of their respective members, taking as «fundamental ontological categories» those where its members have conditions for these characteristics of existence and identity that are not exhaustively specifiable, in terms of ontological dependence, between those members and members of other ontological categories. This paper then makes a revision of the different theories of ontological categories, and their respective interpretations of how many and which categories should be recognized.
2014-01-01T00:00:00ZPowers as Causal Truthmakers
http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127713
[EN]Most theories of causation assume that it must involve some kind of necessity, or that the cause must be entirely sufficient for the effect. Others have already suggested that it should be possible to get a theory of causation from a theory of powers or dispositions. Such a project is far from complete but even here we find that the key point in a dispositional theory of causation has been lacking. This paper attempts to establish some of the most important principles of such a theory and in so doing turn the existing discussion in a new direction.; [ES]La mayoría de las teorías de causación asumen que debe envolverse algún tipo de necesidad, o que la causa debe ser enteramente suficiente para el efecto.

http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127712
[EN]This essay reflects on the relationship between music and morality, and in particular, provides a philosophical answer to two important questions: Can moral character be specifically attributed to music?, and, if so, how does this moral musical character affect on the moral sense of the people who listen to this music? These questions lead to a final reflection on the limits of critical interpretation of the musical work.
http://hdl.handle.net/10366/127711
[EN]This paper focuses on Gundissalinus’s particularly important contribution to metaphysics which it presents in three steps: firstly, a succinct overview of the history of the relevant metaphysical terminology from the Late Ancient period to the Middle Ages shows how, for the first time, Gundissalinus interpreted metaphysics as the name of a discipline (and not just of a book); in a second step, the paper analyzes the specific epistemological foundation of metaphysics as an autonomous science, namely as ontology, in the chapter on metaphysics in Gundissalinus’s De divisione philosophiae, paying particular attention to his criticism of twelfth-century (philosophical) theology as this was developed in the School of Chartres; thirdly, the paper examines a crucial text from the treatise on the division of the sciences: in it, Gundissalinus included an otherwise unknown translation of a passage from Avicenna’s Book of Demonstration which discusses the thorny issue of the subordination of the philosophical disciplines to metaphysics. This subject is one which would continue to receive plenty of attention in later times, as the examples of Robert Kilwardby and John Duns Scotus demonstrate, both of which authors may be considered to have continued Gundissalinus’s metaphysical project.

[EN]This paper, on the basis of a development of some well known Platonic ideas on government, stated in the Republic, puts forward the proposal of a reform of democracy consisting mainly in the addition, to the three classical powers of State, of a fourth one, namely, a council formed by people elected among ordinary citizens endowed with publicly recognized civic, moral and intellectual virtues. This council would simply release not binding statements on different issues of public interest as, for example, decisions taken by the ordinary State powers, in order to provide ordinary citizens with elements of judgment on those issues, without the constrictions usually imposed on the public opinion by political or economic lobbies.
