Los fastos celebrados en la corte de Valladolid con motivo del nacimiento de Felipe IV dieron ocasión a Lerma para exhibir su enorme poder estableciendo para toda su generación el modelo de cortesano que era al mismo tiempo ministro, esteta y soldado. De esta eclosión cortesana fueron testigos de excepción los componentes de la delegación inglesa que había viajado a Valladolid para ratificar la Paz de Londres de 1604 firmada un año antes.
