[EN]Partially encased beams (PEB) are composed elements in which the web of the steel
section is encased by reinforced concrete, increasing the fire resistance of steel sections. PEB
have larger lateral and torsional stiffness and consequently have higher resistance against
lateral–torsional buckling (LTB). Nevertheless, Eurocode 4 part 1-2 do not include the
verification of LTB of continuous composite beams in fire.
This PhD Thesis presents the results of the full scale tests performed on PEB
specimens in order to acquire a deeper understanding about its LTB instability when exposed
to elevated temperatures and quantifying its bending resistance under standard fire ISO834.
The influence of different variables such as steel concrete interaction, temperature level, the
beam slenderness and the load applied were analyzed in the tests performed on a IPE 100
steel beam specimen steel grade S275 encased in reinforced concrete C20/25 with four bars
8mm diameter.
To analyze the bending resistance of different PEB specimens with same geometry but
different load conditions, numerical simulations were performed by means of the Finite
Element (FE) software ANSYS. The FE model was adjusted to experimental data,
considering the shear bond connection concrete-steel with nonlinear springs. The load–slip
curves that characterize the steel concrete interaction were experimentally obtained by a
push-out series test.
An analytical method was proposed to calculate the lateral torsional buckling
resistance moment of PEB laterally unrestrained at high temperature, based on the Eurocode
3 part 1-2 formulation. The analytical results were assessed through experimental tests and
numerical simulations, confirming an adjustment on the safe side
