[ES]La catedral se constituye en uno de los principales hitos de la historia medieval europea. Uno de
estos centros preside la ciudad de Salamanca, población fronteriza del primitivo reino leonés, que se
alza en la segunda mitad del siglo XII y se finaliza en un entorno aproximado en el primer cuarto de
la siguiente centuria. En el interior de la 'Catedral Vieja' se conserva uno de los conjuntos
escultóricos más destacados del tardorrománico hispano, principal tema de estudio de la tesis
doctoral. Este trabajo surge de la necesidad de reconstruir el complejo universo de imágenes
existente, prestando especial atención al contexto histórico y cultural del que emergen, así como al
lugar que ocupan, ampliando de este modo el análisis de investigaciones previas y planteando
nuevas vías. La tesis se divide fundamentalmente en dos grandes apartados: templo y claustro. En
ambos casos ha sido necesario recomponer su génesis, su evolución y la jerarquización espacial
establecida como paso previo al estudio de las representaciones. Esta investigación ha puesto de
manifiesto, además de la singularidad de la plástica monumental por numerosos factores, la
presencia en el templo de un ciclo apocalíptico en el espacio ocupado por los religiosos, mientras
que en el de los fieles se ahonda en este tema sirviéndose de una división muy marcada entre lo
terrestre y lo celeste que viene a reforzar el pensamiento neoplatónico presente en la claustra. En
este último ámbito, la identificación de la Gramática y de la Retórica, unida al saber contenido en
las inscripciones funerarias, se establecen como destacadas manifestaciones para profundizar en la
'prehistoria' del Estudio General de Salamanca fundado por Alfonso IX en 1218 entre sus muros. En
conclusión, con esta tesis doctoral se ha pretendido ampliar el horizonte de los edificios que se
erigen durante este interesante período, marcado por el cambio y por la innovación, en el que la seo
salmantina desempeña un importante papel.
[EN]The cathedral is one of the major milestones of the European Middle Age history. One of them
dominates Salamanca, a border city in the early Kingdom of León, which started in the second half
of the 12th century and finished approximately during the first quarter of the following century. One
of the most prominent sculptural ensembles in the Hispanic Late Romanesque can be found inside
this ‘Catedral Vieja’ [Old Cathedral], which is the main topic of the present doctoral thesis. This
researching work was originated from the need of reconstructing the complex and the wide range of
sculptures in the mentioned set. Special emphasis has been placed on the historic and cultural
context in which they arise and the place where they are located, thus broadening the results from
previous research and opening new routes of study. The present work is divided into two main
parts: temple and cloister. Reconstructing their origins, evolution, and spatial hierarchy has been
necessary as a previous step to examining sculptures themselves. Besides the multifactorial
uniqueness of this monumental sculpture, our study has shown the presence of a set of apocalyptic
images in the area reserved for priests; a theme which appears again as a concern in the place
occupied by parishioners. This is done in a way that creates a boundary between earthly and
heavenly contexts, thus matching the prevailing Neoplatonism in the cloister. Manifestations such
as Grammar and Rhetoric, together with the information contained in funerary inscriptions, have
great importance in terms of a deeper study on the time preceding the Studium Generale of
Salamanca, founded by Alfonso IX in 1218 in the Cathedral itself. In conclusion, the aim of this
doctoral thesis is to broaden the horizons of the buildings that arose during this interesting period,
marked by change and innovation, in which the Old Cathedral of Salamanca plays an essential role.
