caracteriza a Mazinger.
<mods:abstract>[EN]Studies on climatic and anthropogenic effects throughout Earth’s history require absolute dating methods. Most
of these methods rely on precise techniques for radionuclide determination. To enhance the capabilities of γ-ray
spectrometry and facilitate its use in absolute dating, Mazinger, a very-low-background and high-efficiency γ-ray
spectrometry system used in the analysis of oceanic and lacustrine sediments of paleoclimatic interest, has been
updated. This update includes the installation of its second anti-muon veto system, which improves the detection
limits (ld), enabling the successful measurement of small sources with low activity levels, as required in 210Pb or
U-Th dating. A reconfiguration of the acquisition electronics was necessary to handle the increased event rate
generated by adding the new active shielding, while maintaining Mazinger’s high detection efficiency.
This work describes the new electronics configuration, as well as Mazinger’s performance achieved with it
in terms of resolution, efficiency, and figure of merit (FOM). Corrections for true-summing-coincidences are also
affected by the new configuration. A complete characterization of the detector background after the system upgrade
is performed and compared to that obtained with the previous system. The FOM improves twofold compared to
the previous version of the detector and eightfold compared to a conventional low-background level HPGe detector.
Simply adding a new veto halved the total count rate and reduced the background peaks count rates.
The improvement of Mazinger was successfully validated by 210Pb dating of a sediment core from Sobrado
Lagoon in Galicia, Spain. The first 26 cm of the core, from top to bottom, were sampled in 1 cm high hemidiscs. This
core is characterized by its low dry density (0.5 g/cm3 on average) and the low available dry mass, which is less
than 1.5 g. Its activity levels are approximately 0.068 Bq/g for total 210Pb and 0.049 Bq/g for 226Ra. The activities of
210Pb and 226Ra have been measured in the 26 samples with great accuracy, allowing the excess 210Pb activities to be
determined with high precision, obtaining an age model with uncertainties less than 5% in most of the core, and less
than 2% in the deepest sections. The strong agreement with the reference dates provided by 137Cs and 14C profiles
ensures the validity and robustness of the dating obtained by applying the CRS model to this core.</mods:abstract>
