Su importancia era capital, por cuanto eran los encargados de ofrecer cobijo espiritual a una masa poblacional que veía en estos miembros del estamento eclesiástico una figura ejemplarizante. Al mismo tiempo, constituían una de las principales autoridades en el ámbito local y un miembro más de la comunidad con la cual se relacionaban en su vida cotidiana. Su procedencia sociológica se encuentra, todavía, rodeada de una oscuridad que los historiadores solamente han podido disipar recurriendo a la conjetura. En este trabajo intentaremos acercarnos a esta problemática empleando, como marco espacial y temporal, la diócesis de Salamanca en los primeros años del siglo XVIII. Emplearemos los expedientes de órdenes custodiados en el Archivo Diocesano y, más concretamente, las informaciones de moribus et vita que contienen para intentar reconstruir su base sociológica. [EN] For many years, Church historiography has focused its studies on the top section of the hierarchy and its institutions, leaving the most important sector orphan: the lower clergy. They were extremely important, because they were the ones in charge of offering spiritual shelter to a mass of population that saw in these members of the ecclesiastical state an exemplary figure. At the same time, they constituted part of the main authorities at the local level, and another member of the community with which people interacted in their daily lives. Its sociological origin is still clouded in mist, a mist that historians have only been able to dispel by resorting to conjecture. In this work, we will try to approach the problem using, as a spatial and temporal framework, the diocese of Salamanca in the first years of the 18th century.
