El estudio abarca un amplio espectro de objetos —retraticos, miniaturas, monedas, medallas, y otros soportes— que comparten una característica común: la plasmación de la efigie regia a escala reducida, concebida para ser portátil, manipulable y de fácil circulación, tanto en espacios públicos como privados. La investigación examina también algunas imágenes en las que figuran la reina Mariana de Austria, madre del monarca, y sus dos esposas, María Luisa de Orleans y Mariana de Neoburgo. El trabajo parte de una doble constatación: por un lado, hasta fechas relativamente recientes, los especialistas han prestado escasa atención al reinado de Carlos II, en buena medida debido a su tradicional desvalorización histórica; por otro, los retratos de pequeño formato han sido poco estudiados y, además, abordados de forma fragmentaria. A su vez, se evidencia que la incorporación de la numismática en las investigaciones de la historia del arte sobre este periodo ha sido generalmente limitada. Por lo tanto, la tesis pretende cubrir este vacío mediante un análisis integral, crítico y sistemático de los pequeños retratos, que asimismo permita destacar su relevancia histórica y profundizar en las estrategias visuales de construcción, representación y difusión del poder de la monarquía española a finales del siglo XVII. Además, entre los objetivos secundarios, se presta especial atención a los usos, funciones y espacios de circulación y visibilidad que estos objetos tuvieron en su contexto. La investigación ha logrado reunir y examinar un corpus heterogéneo de imágenes —ejecutadas en distintas técnicas y soportes, y procedentes de orígenes geográficos diversos— que conforma un panorama amplio y representativo de este tipo de objetos. Para ello, se han incorporado piezas inéditas o escasamente estudiadas, junto con la actualización y el enriquecimiento de la bibliografía existente con publicaciones tanto españolas como internacionales. Asimismo, se ha adoptado una perspectiva metodológica que articula distintas disciplinas: la historia del arte, la iconografía, la historia política, la numismática y los estudios sobre moda y joyería. En conjunto, este trabajo aporta una nueva mirada sobre la representación regia en la época de Carlos II al proponer una lectura integral y contextualizada del retrato en formato reducido, superando los enfoques previos y contribuyendo a su revalorización en el marco historiográfico actual. [EN] This doctoral thesis analyzes the representation of King Charles II of Spain through smallformat portraiture during his reign (1665-1700). The study examines a wide range of objects— retraticos, miniatures, coins, medals, and other media—that share a common characteristic: the depiction of the royal image at a reduced scale, conceived to be portable, manipulable, and easily distributed, both in public and private spaces. This research also considers representations of Queen Mariana of Austria, the king’s mother, and his two wives, Marie Louise d’Orléans and Maria Anna of Neuburg. This work is based on a twofold observation: first, that until relatively recently, scholars have not paid much attention to the reign of Charles II, largely due to its traditional historical undervaluation; and second, that small-format portraits have remained little studied and, what is more, have been approached in a fragmented way. It is also evident that the incorporation of numismatics into art historical research on this period has generally been limited. This thesis therefore aims to fill this gap through a comprehensive, critical, and systematic analysis of small-format portraits, not only to highlight their historical significance but also to explore the visual strategies used to construct, represent, and disseminate the power of the Spanish monarchy in the late 17th century. Furthermore, as a secondary objective, the study closely investigates the uses and functions of these objects, along with their visibility and circulation within their historical setting. This research has compiled and studied a heterogeneous corpus of images—executed using different techniques and media and originating from diverse geographical contexts—that provides a broad and representative overview of this type of object. To achieve this, it has included unexamined or rarely studied works and updated and enriched the existing bibliography with both Spanish and international publications. Additionally, it has adopted a methodological approach that integrates multiple disciplines: art history, iconography, political history, numismatics, and studies on fashion and jewelry.
