[ES] El objeto de este trabajo es dar a conocer la importancia que el libro y la lectura cumplen en el archipiélago desde el final de la conquista hasta fines del siglo XVIII. El análisis se realiza a través de las instituciones implicadas en la enseñanza y los tipos y modos de lectura que se realizan, así como las características de las bibliotecas particulares, su contenido y categoría social de los propietarios. De las mismas se deduce el papel jugado por los sectores profesionales en el acaparamiento y difusión de la lectura, en especial aquellas relacionadas con la Iglesia y con la administración.
[EN] The aim of this paper is to present a picture of the importance that books and reading have had in the Canaries since the end of the Spanish Conquest till the end of the XVIII Century. The analysis is done through the institutions involved in teaching, through the types and ways of reading and also through the characteristics of the prívate libraries, their content and the social class of their owners. The role played by the professional sectors in the capture and difussion of reading are deduced from those characteristics, principally those related to the Church and the Administration.
