Dicho proceso bisecular se enmarca en cinco momentos muy caracterizados:
1485-1519: Plaza del Mundo.
1520-1559: Un rebaño y un pastor.
1560-1598: En defensa y ayuda de la Santa Sede.
1599-1655: Estar en el justo medio: la pax hispánica y la Guerra de los Treinta Años.
1655-1700: «Por no romper la quietud»: Entre la incertidumbre y la decadencia.</dim:field>
