Trabajo de Fin de Máster en Investigación en Comunicación Audiovisual. Curso 2018-2019.
[EN] The aim of this paper is to find out the reasons why video games are played in Spain. To achieve this purpose, the theory of uses and gratifications is used, trying to introduce a new motive known as "professionalization" to give a context to the current situation in the world of video games within the well-known "e-sports".
A total of 902 people between the ages of 12 and 56 took part in the study (753 men and 149 women).
After analysing the results, it was determined that "emotion" motive was still the main reason why players decided to spend their time in this type of entertainment. In addition, it is observed that this study follows the line of previous national investigations such as they one by González-Vázquez & Igartua (2018).
Finally, the new motive "professionalization" is poorly represented, although we can see a trend in which "competitiveness" continues to grow. The upward trend of this motif may have a direct impact on future research.
