[EN] The author tries to define the concept of «engine» in eighteenthcentury French novel by means of its relationship with characters, plot and private spaces. In order to establish a classification, a difference is made between «gallant engines» and «gothic engines». Some examples of both sorts of engines are given. The engine is for the author not only a mere object in the novel, but a narrative strategy which defines the relationships between the different elements of that novel.
