[EN] Due to the heavy cultural load that non-standard language varieties in literary works carry, preserving their presence in translation is one of the main challenges that a translator faces. The case of Black English Vernacular (BEV) poses a further problem because apart from not having an exact equivalent in the Spanish culture, it represents an important mark of distinction for the black community of the United States. In this study, the translation into Spanish of BEV in the novel If He Hollers Let Him Go by Chester Himes is analysed. To that end, the analysis will focus on the passages in which the use of BEV is most significant in order to discover the translation strategies followed by the translator. Although the translator achieves certain uniformity when rendering BEV into Spanish throughout the whole text, in some fragments she opts for standardising the target language and in others she resorts to compensation techniques.
