[EN] This chapter contributes a set of locations where the borderlands are made manifest, a particular geography of incarceration that actualizes the violence of the thin border, be it at a variety of deten‐ tion centres or inside a car pulled up for speeding. Instead of viewing the border as an unbroken line with clear coordinates, the chapter mobilises what José David Saldívar calls ‘pensamiento fronterizo’ away from the US‐Mexico border and resituates it in a variety of different intersticios (Saldívar 2012, 1, 59) or shifting zones inside the country. The analysis of Julia Álvarez’s Afterlife and Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive illustrates how contemporary writers engage with these rerouted borderlands by making them visible and documenting them, by identifying their power as epistemic tools, and by creating a language that identifies them. Their critical look at the inside allows them to resist cartographies of domination and to defamiliarise the immediate as they create their alternative mappings of the here and now.

When she faces an ethical dilema, the protagonist does not slam the door but lets the Other in. This is the beginning of a hospitable response where “someone, or ones, categorized as ‘outside’, as not necessarily by right or legal contract, part of the ‘inside’, is temporarily brought within” (Still 2010, 11). The question is what happens once ‘the guest’ is inside, and how the host is changed in the process.

[EN] This chapter examines Frank Spotnitz’s four-season series The Man in the High Castle, an expansive adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s eponymous novel that was produced by Amazon between 2015 and 2019. To elucidate the series approach to masculinity as comprehensively as possible, the series is examined structurally, comparatively and thematically, with attention to, respectively, the peculiarities of its meta-science-fictional narration, the differences and continuities regarding the original novel and, finally, the series’ own approach to the interrelation of masculinities and fascism. In these ways, the chapter moves from the formal to the ideological dimensions of the series in a constant comparison with the novel. The main argument is that, due to its peculiar updating of the novel’s double game of estrangement, Spotnitz’s series pays close critical attention to how fascism is deeply rooted in the hegemony of patriarchal masculinities, thus responding to a contemporary anxiety with neo-fascist movements and ideologies.

[EN] While the persuasive power of metaphor in migration discourse has been established, particularly from a Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, existing research remains limited. It has predominantly focused on media articles and political cartoons, which often present migration in a negative light. As a result, there is a significant gap in the analysis of metaphors and metonymies in complex, multimodal genres such as children's picture books and documentary films, which can offer alternative narratives.
This study aims to address this gap by exploring conceptual metaphors and metonymies of migration constructed verbally, visually, and multimodally across different genres. With a special emphasis on exploring static construals (e.g., picture books) and dynamic ones (e.g., film), the research analyses how discourse creators use metaphors and metonymies to communicate messages about migration and migrants.
The research is based on four key theoretical tenets: discourse as an interdisciplinary concept (van Dijk, 1997); metaphor and metonymy as cognitive and ideological tools (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980; Charteris-Black, 2004); the fundamental role of multimodality in contemporary communication (van Dijk, 2011; Machin & Mayr, 2012); and genre as a framework for metaphor analysis (Caballero, 2017; Forceville, 2024). It combines Multimodal Metaphor and Metonymy Theory (Forceville, 1996, Forceville and Urios-Aparisi, 2009) with the social semiotic model developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 2021), including its adaptation for picture books (Painter, Martin & Unsworth, 2013).
The outcome of this research is twofold. First, it contributes to developing practical tools that can inform the selection of educational materials, helping educators and professionals in multicultural environments. Second, it raises critical awareness of the verbal and visual resources used to construct narratives on socially relevant topics like migration, highlighting their potential to challenge prevailing negative discourses.
