Contrapunteo de los Orishas y de Los Aldeanos: el hip hop cubano dentro y fuera de la Revolución

Abstract

[EN]This paper examines Cuban hip hop in the (post) «Special Period» as a scriptible or writerly text. I contrast the commercial sphere of Los Orishas to the «underground» sphere of Los Aldeanos vis-à-vis the «nationalization» of hip hop in Cuba. Through a close reading of song lyrics and considering also musical elements, I demonstrate the way Los Orishas and Los Aldeanos navigate Cuban Revolutionary ideology, oscillating between nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Paradoxically, Los Orishas operate within a Revolutionary ideology, despite living outside of Cuba, whereas Los Aldeanos exploit their position in Havana to represent their actual conditions and criticize their government. This paper illustrates the importance of Cuban hip hop in and outside the island for the flow of information and culture.

[ES]Este trabajo analiza el hip hop cubano del (post) «periodo especial» como un texto scriptible. Examino el contrapunto entre el ámbito comercial de Los Orishas y el ámbito «underground» de Los Aldeanos vis-à-vis la «nacionalización» del hip hop en Cuba. Mediante una lectura detallada de letras y tomando en cuenta el fondo musical, muestro cómo Los Orishas y Los Aldeanos navegan en el ideario revolucionario cubano y oscilan entre nacionalismo y cosmopolitismo. Paradójicamente, Los Orishas obran dentro del ideario revolucionario pese a estar fuera de Cuba, mientras que Los Aldeanos explotan su posición en La Habana para representar sus condiciones actuales y criticar a su Gobierno. Este trabajo ilustra la importancia del hip hop cubano dentro y fuera de la Isla para el flujo de información y cultura.
