La figura de Timoteo O’Scanlan: una revisión

Abstract

Logan (1964) and Parrilla Hermida (1980) are the authors of what have become to be the referential publications on the life and work of Timoteo O’Scanlan in English and Spanish respectively. However, recent scholarship both on the general contextual background of Irish emigration to Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and more specifically on or connected with O’Scanlan are showing these works to be in need of major revision. The present article undertakes such a revision and –on a basis of new archive information, close analysis of O’Scanlan’s writings and the scholarship in the field generally and specifically– it will correct errors, fill in gaps and provide new information. All of these give a much more comprehensive analysis of the figure of Timoteo O’Scanlan and his role in eighteenth-century Spanish medicine, science and culture.

Los artículos publicados por Logan (1964) en inglés y por Parrilla Hermida (1980) en español fueron los primeros trabajos que intentaron dar una visión global de la vida y la obra de Timoteo O’Scanlan, médico irlandés afincado en España en el siglo dieciocho, y han servido como trabajos de referencia desde su aparición. El tiempo transcurrido y la importancia de O’Scanlan llaman a una profunda revisión de aquellos estudios. La investigación posterior, tanto de tipo general como más específicamente relacionada con O’Scanlan, aporta nuevos datos que permiten llenar las lagunas dejadas por aquellos trabajos de hace casi medio siglo, corregir errores que aparecen en ellos y abordar la figura del médico y su obra desde nuevas perspectivas. Por lo tanto, el trabajo actual presentará nueva documentación, junto con un análisis a fondo de su obra escrita (que sorprendentemente hasta ahora no se ha dado), que permitirán tener una visión mucho más global de la figura del médico irlandés y su encaje en la España de la segunda mitad del siglo dieciocho.
