Resumen
[ES]Si nos atenemos a las estadísticas de consumo, parece que las fibras naturales han perdido la partida frente a las sintéticas. Sin embargo, hay una corriente de opinión, cada vez más numerosa, que lucha por un planeta más sostenible y que, por tanto, es partidaria de aprovechar los recursos naturales, especialmente si son renovables y biodegradables. Es por ello que las fibras animales y vegetales (también algunas minerales) pueden tener un papel importante en el futuro próximo.
Entre las fibras de origen natural, la lana es una de las más antiguas que conoce la humanidad. Sus buenas propiedades, tanto en las prendas de vestir como en relación con el medio ambiente se conocen desde hace mucho tiempo. En efecto son fibras que permiten fabricar prendas cómodas, transpirables, con gran capacidad de aislamiento del frío y del calor, con buen comportamiento contra el fuego y que protegen de los rayos ultravioleta del sol más que otras muchas fibras. Por otra parte, la lana es una fibra renovable y biodegradable, entre otras propiedades apropiadas para el medio ambiente.
España, cuna del merino, se ha distanciado mucho en cantidad de lana producida, y sobre todo en calidad, de los países que lideran el mercado, como Australia o Nueva Zelanda. Aquí tenemos explotaciones pequeñas, dispersas y con muy poca (o ninguna) coordinación entre ellas. Ello unido a que las ovejas se han destinado principalmente a la producción de carne y leche, ha hecho que la lana haya sido considerada prácticamente un subproducto con calidad mínima. ¿Estamos a tiempo de potenciar de nuevo la industria lanera española? Es muy difícil pero no imposible.
