Do the caregiving spouses of people with dementia in Spain perceive the same barriers for taking part in interventions as caregiving offspring?

Abstract

[EN]The aim of this qualitative research is to examine the difficulties perceived by caregivers for taking part in an offered intervention, exploring whether there are differences depending on caregiver's degree of kinship. Forty-two family caregivers from Salamanca (Spain) were interviewed after declining an invitation to take part in an intervention programme. All the telephone conversations were transcribed verbatim. The transcriptions were subject to a thematic content analysis using QDA MINER software. The barriers identified were (1) difficulties adapting to the intervention's schedule due to a lack of time, or incompatibility with its dates or timetables, (2) belief among the caregivers that they do not need or are not interested in the support the intervention provides, (3) impossibility to separate from the family member to attend due to the absence of relief or a feeling of guilt, (4) caregiver's health issues, (5) difficulties with accessibility, and (6) belief that the therapies serve no useful purpose. Certain differences were identified depending on the caregiver's kinship. Understanding the difficulties caregivers face for taking part in the interventions will enable steps to be taken to remove and/or reduce such barriers, whereby more caregivers will benefit from interventions.

[ES] Introducción: El objetivo de esta investigación cualitativa es examinar las dificultades percibidas por los cuidadores para participar en una intervención ofrecida, explorando si existen diferencias dependiendo del grado de parentesco del cuidador. Métodos: Se entrevistó a cuarenta y dos cuidadores familiares de Salamanca (España) tras haber rechazado una invitación para participar en un programa de intervención. Todas las conversaciones telefónicas se transcribieron textualmente. Las transcripciones fueron sometidas a un análisis de contenido temático utilizando el software QDA MINER. Resultados: Las barreras identificadas fueron: (1) Dificultades para adaptarse al horario de la intervención debido a la falta de tiempo o incompatibilidad con las fechas o los horarios, (2) Creencia de que no necesitan o no están interesados en el apoyo que proporciona la intervención, (3) Imposibilidad de separarse del familiar para asistir, debido a la falta de relevo o a sentimientos de culpa, (4) Problemas de salud del propio cuidador, (5) Dificultades de accesibilidad, (6) Creencia de que las terapias no tienen una utilidad práctica. Se identificaron ciertas diferencias en función del parentesco del cuidador. Conclusiones: Comprender las dificultades que enfrentan los cuidadores para participar en las intervenciones permitirá tomar medidas para eliminar o reducir dichas barreras, logrando así que más cuidadores se beneficien de los programas.
