Abstract

[ES] En La Orden de Predicadores en Salamanca durante la Baja Edad Media. Estudio histórico-artístico del convento medieval de San Esteban el autor aborda una interesante y crucial parte de la historia de los dominicos en la ciudad del Tormes, con base en los diferentes espacios conventuales que habitaron los frailes durante la Baja Edad Media. Gracias a este estudio, se desvelan aspectos generalmente desconocidos sobre el anterior conjunto arquitectónico, al haber quedado relegados a un segundo plano por la monumentalidad de los edificios de la Edad Moderna y sus reformas. Las diversas fuentes se ponen en contacto con sus respectivos contextos, en los que las formas de vida, la formación, y los nexos de los frailes mendicantes con el mundo académico resultan decisivos. A partir del análisis de las imágenes, la liturgia, la documentación y los informes arqueológicos, se propone un recorrido por la cotidianidad de los religiosos de la Orden de Santo Domingo en la ciudad universitaria entre el siglo XIII y principios del XVI, desde su primera ubicación extramuros en la iglesia de San Juan el Blanco hasta su asentamiento en el interior de la muralla en lo que conocemos como San Esteban. Entre las principales aportaciones, sobresalen las precisiones cronológicas sobre la conclusión de las obras durante el primer tercio del siglo XIV, la articulación de las oficinas y dependencias más importantes del cenobio medieval y la relevancia de la estética mudéjar como una elección deliberada para estancias funcionales del convento dominico salmantino. [ENG] In The Order of Preachers in Salamanca during the Late Middle Ages. An Art-Historical Study of the Medieval Convent of San Esteban, the author examines a significant and crucial chapter in the history of the Dominicans in the city of the Tormes, based on the various conventual spaces inhabited by the friars during the Late Middle Ages. This study reveals aspects of the earlier architectural complex that are generally unknown, having been overshadowed by the monumentality of the Early Modern buildings and their subsequent renovations. The different sources are examined within their respective contexts, in which ways of life, education, and the ties between the mendicant friars and the academic world prove to be decisive. Through the analysis of images, liturgy, documentation, and archaeological reports, the book offers an exploration of the daily life of the religious of the Order of Saint Dominic in the university city between the thirteenth century and the early sixteenth century, from their first extramural location at the church of San Juan el Blanco to their settlement within the city walls at what is now known as San Esteban. Among its main contributions are refined chronological clarifications regarding the completion of the works in the first third of the fourteenth century, the articulation of the principal offices and dependencies of the medieval monastery, and the significance of Mudejar aesthetics as a deliberate choice for the functional spaces of the Dominican convent in Salamanca.
