Introduction: Disc degeneration is a disease with an uncertain etiology, as well as its therapeutic approach, therefore updates and research in this area are highly important.
Objective: Carry out a search for the main evidences available in physiotherapy for the treatment of disc degeneration and confront them in order to verify their effectiveness.
Material and Methods: A systematic search and bibliographic review was performed in PubMed, PEDro and Google Scholar databases of studies published in English and Spanish in the last 10 years. An evaluation of the level of evidence of the articles finally added was carried out as well, using the PEDro scale, the impact factor and the EBM scale.
Results: 10 articles were grouped into 6 related categories of the topic addressed. The different studies evaluate a series of techniques and / or methods such as: cervical traction, cervical stabilization, manual therapy, exercise programs for cervical muscle strength and electrotherapy.
Conclusion: There is limited evidence regarding studies evaluating the physiotherapy treatment of disc degeneration. Strength work, cervical stabilization, as well as passive techniques such as traction and manual therapy seem to have similar results and little improvement in the short term. Regular physical exercise seems to be the only tool that has long-term results. At the same time, electrotherapy seems to give good results, however, research studies that deepen the effectiveness of this therapy are necessary.
