[EN] The present doctoral thesis approaches the conceptualization about “university city”, considering the transition from the 19th to the 20th century and its consolidation throughout this period. Its object is the relational phenomenon between the city and the university in the search for understanding and conceptualize what can really characterize a university city. Starting from a conceptual historical construction, passing by identification and demonstration of models, this work highlights the cities of Salamanca and Campinas as two references that will be analyzed. Having them as a parameter, other examples are presented in order to demonstrate the relational phenomenon is the central element of the identity construction of these cities, which
have a set of distinctive marks, they are Transversal, Interdisciplinary, Plural, Creative, Inclusive, and Welcoming. Presenting these distinctive set, it is possible to state that the city is a university city, however, it is known that the implementation of public policies, integrative activities and community extensive actions which demonstrate these characteristics, will be only noticed in those cities that the University Project is combined with local interests, in order to promote local development, articulating the territory and consolidate the identity of a university city.
