[ENG]Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex condition that presents significant challenges due to its high prevalence and complexity and the psychosocial impairment and mortality risk associated with it, making early and appropriate intervention crucial to improve the prognosis and quality of life of individuals with BPD.
Objective: The objective of this study was to analyse the different effective therapeutic approaches being recently investigated for the treatment of BPD that are alternatives to dialectical behavior therapy, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical decisions and enhancing evidence-based practice in the management of this disorder.
Methods: To this end, information was collected from 25 scientific research articles published between 2018 and 2023, obtained from the electronic databases Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed.
Results: The results show the wide variety of effective therapeutic approaches that exist in the treatment of BPD, with particular relevance of mentalization-based therapy (MBT). Other relevant findings were that generalist approaches and standard clinical care were mostly effective and comparable to different BPD treatments, supporting the feasibility of their application. The quality of the therapeutic relationship, the sense of belonging to the group, early intervention and the adaptation of the treatment to the individual's needs were shown to be important factors.
Conclusions: In conclusion, there is a wide range of effective interventions for treating BPD that are alternatives to dialectical behavior therapy and their application should be considered according to the needs of the individual patient.
Practical implications: The wide variety of interventions contributes to increasing the feasibility of BPD treatment, in turn influencing the quality of life of individuals with BPD.
