Manipulación genética: el nuevo monstruo de Frankenstein en el cine

Abstract

[ES] El cine se ha ocupado en multitud de ocasiones de lanzar los interrogantes que abren los avances científicos y su repercusión en la vida del ser humano. No en vano la ciencia ficción es un género consagrado a esa tarea, la de intentar predecir hacia dónde camina la humanidad gracias a la aplicación de nuevos descubrimientos. La manipulación genética, por su extraordinario abanico de posibilidades, no podía escapar a guiones que intentaran vislumbrar las aplicaciones que la sociedad pudiera hacer en un futuro próximo. Este artículo analiza tres títulos representativos como son Los niños del Brasil/ The Boys from Brazil (1978), El enviado/ Godsend (2004) y La isla/ The Island (2005), para ilustrar cómo el cine no ha abandonado el modelo narrativo iniciado por El doctor Frankenstein/ Frankenstein (1931) de James Whale, que a su vez toma el mito griego de Prometeo, para mostrar las terribles consecuencias que sufre aquél que osa emular a Dios, único creador de vida. Por último, un más detallado análisis de Gattaca (1997) de Andrew Niccol permite abandonar ese modelo efectista y, con un guión casi profético que hoy es más ciencia que ficción, llamar la atención sobre las preocupaciones que actualmente tienen juristas, bioéticos y organismos como la UNESCO en relación con la intimidad genética y el presunto determinismo del genoma humano.

[EN] On many occasions the cinema has been concerned with launching the questions raised by scientific progress and its repercussions on the lives of human beings. Not in vain is science fiction a genre dedicated to this task, that of attempting to predict where humanity isgoing thanks to the application of new discoveries. Genetic manipulation, because of its extraordinary range of possibilities, could not escapescripts that try to glimpse how society might apply it in the near future.This article analyses three representative titles, The Boys from Brazil (1978), Godsend (2004) and The Island (2005), to show how the cinema has not abandoned the narrative model begun by James Whale s Frankenstein (1931), which in turn takes the Greek myth of Prometheusto show the terrible consequences undergone by those who dare to emulate God, the only creator of life. Finally, a more detailed analysis of Gattaca (1997) by Andrew Niccol makes it possible to abandon this sensationalist model and, with an almost prophetic script which today is more science than fiction, call attention to the current fears of jurists, experts in bioethics and bodies such as the UNESCO regarding genetic privacy and the presumed determinism of the human genome.
