Sobre la intención de la etnografía virtual

Abstract

Qué mueve a un etnógrafo a iniciar una investigación cuyo objeto de estudio reside en Internet y cuáles son las claves del método etnográfico cuando el desarrollo de la acción se traslada al ciberespacio, son algunas de las preguntas que este artículo trata de abar-car. Siguiendo el enfoque wolcottiano consistente en hacer una revisión inversa de las estrategias metodológicas y los objetos de investigación más habituales, el texto analiza aquello que constituye el núcleo de la etnografía virtual, tratando de integrarlo en una síntesis global que dote de sentido y diferencie a este tipo de investigación del resto de métodos de corte cualitativo. A modo de discusión, en el artículo se afronta la dialéctica entre el enfoque cualitativo aplicado a los estudios de/en Internet y la aproximación específicamente etnográfica en ese mismo escenario.

What moves to an ethnographer to initiate a survey on Internet object and which are the keys of the ethnographic method when the development of combat operations is trans-ferred to the cyberspace. These are some of the questions that this article tries to in-clude. I come from the wolcottian approach for making an inverse revision of the meth-odological strategies and the more habitual objects of investigation. The text analyzes what it constitutes the nucleus of the virtual ethnography, and it tries to integrate this in a global synthesis for making sense and set the differences between this type of investi-gation and the rest of qualitative methods. As a discussion, this article includes a dialec-tic process between the qualitative approach in the Internet research and the specifically ethnographic approach in that same scene.
