Resumen
El «redescubrimiento» del archipiélago canario en la Edad Media puso en contacto a las islas con Europa, especialmente a través del comercio. Las Canarias fueron explotadas sistemáticamente y sus productos concurrieron a los principales mercados mediterráneos y atlánticos. Productos variados, incluyendo los propios moradores del archipiélago, fueron conocidos en Italia, España, Portugal, Francia. De ellos uno llamó la atención de los europeos, en especial por su canto: el pájaro canario. Su comercio fue activo desde el mismo momento del inicio de la conquista, y a la conclusión de ésta siguió interesando a los mercaderes su trato hasta el siglo XVIII, época en que decae por haberse logrado la reproducción de los pájaros en cautividad.
