Creolisation and Caribbeanness: The Assertion of Identity in Contemporary English Caribbean Short Fiction

Abstract

[ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el proceso de la expresión de la identidad en el contexto sociocultural y literario del Caribe anglófono a través de tres narraciones cortas de autores afro-caribeños (Olive Senior, Velma Pollard, y Earl Lovelace). Dicho proceso es desarrollado por el individuo/escritor a través de una reconciliación y convergencia de manifestaciones u orientaciones socioculturales de diversos contextos o espacios sociales en su sociedad; manifestándose, por lo general, una reafirmación de las manifestaciones socioculturales afro-caribeñas históricamente denigradas por un discurso oficialista euro-caribeño. Y esta necesaria convergencia, reconciliación y reafirmación de manifestaciones o espacios socioculturales para la sana articulación de una identidad cultural se manifiesta por igual en el contenido y en la forma de estos textos.

[EN] This work analyses the expression of cultural identity within the sociocultural and literary context of the English Caribbean through the works of three Afro-Caribbean authors (Olive Senior, Velma Pollard, and Earl Lovelace). In these three short fictional works, the writer/individual articulates a culturally-identified self by juxtaposing and reconciling different manifestations from diverse sociocultural milieus in his society, while asserting the Afro-Caribbean sociocultural universe historically denigrated due to the predominance of a Euro-Caribbean sociocultural discourse. This articulation and reaffirmation of a Caribbean cultural identity takes place in both the form and content of these works.
