Deconstructing Tradition and Reconstructing the Self: Alice Walker’s Possessing the Secret of Joy

Abstract

[ES] En Possessing the Secret of Joy, Alice Walker examina la tradición oral de narración de historias y la mutilación genital femenina, ambas de origen africana, afirmando la necesidad de considerar el punto de vista femenino a la hora de analizar cultura y tradición. Este estudio muestra cómo Walker adopta la narración de historias como parte de las tradiciones africana y afroamericana y equipara el cuerpo de la mujer con su narrativa. Mediante esta combinación hace posible la reconstrucción de la identidad fragmentada y la reconciliación con el cuerpo mutilado.

[ENG] In Possessing the Secret of Joy, AliceWalker examines the oral tradition of storytelling and the female genital mutilation, both of African origin, asserting the need to consider the female point of view when analyzing culture and traditions. This study shows how Walker embraces storytelling as part of the African and African American traditions and equates the female body with her narrative. It is through this blending that the reconstruction of the fragmented self and the reconciliation of the mutilated body becomes possible.
