Resumen
El cólico del lactante es una afección benigna y autorresolutiva cuya aparición provoca una gran ansiedad en los padres y cuidadores. Puesto que su etiología es por el momento desconocida, no existe una opción de tratamiento clara. En los últimos años se han llevado a cabo estudios acerca de la utilización de probióticos como tratamiento del cólico del lactante, los cuales han obtenido resultados esperanzadores. Debido al gran papel que juega la enfermería en la detección de los síntomas del cólico del lactante y en la identificación de los bebés candidatos a tratamiento, en el presente trabajo se realiza una revisión de la bibliografía escrita sobre el tema para esclarecer si la probioticoterapia es o no efectiva en el manejo del cólico del lactante. Tras dicha revisión se concluye que el probiótico Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 –el más utilizado en las investigaciones– puede ser efectivo en el tratamiento del cólico del lactante en los niños alimentados exclusiva o predominantemente con lactancia materna. Son necesarios más estudios que determinen la efectividad de probióticos diferentes de Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 y la eficacia de este en el tratamiento del cólico del lactante en los niños alimentados con fórmula de alimentación artificial.
