El cine de poesía: ¿una «referencia literaria innecesaria»?

Abstract

Does cinema need to think of itself through poetry? Are literary references necessary to cinematographic thought? These are some of the questions that arose when, in 1965, Pier Paolo Pasolini turned to poetry to define the new visual-narrative tradition that he saw in cinema. This work takes up some points of what was one of the most challenging theoretical proposals of the Italian filmmaker and suggests reading «cinema of poetry» as a movement between two critical paradigms, the literary and the filmic, as a gesture that allows his proposal to go beyond the debate promoted by semiology. Literary reference thus becomes necessary; not to return to poetic symbolism, nor to poetic cinema, and even less to cinema as visual poetry, but to think cinema as system or mode of representation, as Noël Burch will defend shortly after.

¿Necesita el cine pensarse a sí mismo a través de la poesía? ¿Son las referencias literarias necesarias al pensamiento cinematográfico? Estas son algunas de las cuestiones que surgieron cuando, en 1965, Pier Paolo Pasolini recurrió a la poesía para definir la nueva tradición visual-narrativa que veía afirmarse en el cine. Este trabajo retoma algunos puntos de la que fue una de las propuestas teóricas más audaces del cineasta italiano y sugiere leer el «cine de poesía» como movimiento entre dos paradigmas críticos, el literario y el fílmico, gesto que sitúa su propuesta más allá del debate promovido por la semiología. La referencia literaria se vuelve así necesaria, no para retornar al simbolismo poético, ni al cine poético y menos aún al cine como poesía visual, sino para pensar el cine como sistema o modo de representación, como defenderá Noël Burch poco después.
