Fútbol, dictadura y derechos humanos. El Mundial de Fútbol de 1978 y la solidaridad neerlandesa con Argentina

Abstract

[ES] Este trabajo demuestra que el Mundial de Fútbol de 1978 fue un punto clave en la evolución de la solidaridad neerlandesa con Argentina. Basándonos en fuentes tanto orales como escritas, hemos reconstruido la evolución de esta solidaridad desde la indiferencia inicial hasta el apoyo concreto. Los exiliados argentinos desempeñaron un papel protagonista en este proceso al utilizar la campaña neerlandesa para un boicot del Mundial como vehículo para denunciar las violaciones de derechos humanos por la dictadura argentina. Durante el Mundial, estas denuncias llevaron a la irrupción de las Madres de Plaza de Mayo en el plano internacional, lo que impulsó la formación del primer grupo de apoyo para las Madres en Países Bajos. Dado que la dictadura trató activamente de impedir esta solidaridad, esta investigación pone en duda el supuesto éxito de la dictadura en sus intentos de instrumentalizar el Mundial de 1978 para su beneficio político. Finalmente, de manera más general, los resultados de este estudio ayudan a comprender el surgimiento de los derechos humanos como discurso global durante la década de 1970, los intentos de regímenes autoritarios de instrumentalizar grandes eventos deportivos y la importancia del fútbol en sociedades modernas.

[EN] This research shows that the 1978 World Cup was a key moment in the evolution of Dutch solidarity with Argentina. Based on both oral and written sources, the dissertation reconstructs the development of this solidarity from initial indifference to concrete support. Argentine exiles played a leading role in this process by using the attention generated by the Dutch boycott campaign of the World Cup to denounce the human rights violations by the Argentine dictatorship. During the World Cup, these efforts led to the emergence of the group Mothers of Plaza de Mayo on the international stage, which soon after prompted the formation of the first support group of its kind in the Netherlands. Given that the dictatorship actively tried to prevent this solidarity, this research casts doubt on its alleged success to instrumentalise the 1978 World Cup for its own political benefit. Finally, in a more general sense, the findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the emergence of human rights as a global discourse during the 1970s, the authoritarian regime’s endeavours to instrumentalise major sporting events and the importance of football in modern society.
