Traducción de textos budistas: una aproximación histórica, filosófica y filológica

Abstract

Since Vedic times, words were deified, as they were believed to represent reality in its fullness at its most transcendental level. What they could signify, as well as the numerous metaphysical wonders attributed to them, were ideas that would be widely debated also during the transmission of Buddhism throughout Asia. Translations of the Mahāyānic Buddhist texts faced the ancient challenge of using words as a means of conveying a higher reality by means of a new script: Chinese ideograms. Influenced by the śūnyatā 空 philosophy of Nāgārjuna 龍樹, this complex process of translation in which ideas could precede sounds led — as we will see in the analysis of the Prajñāpāramitā-hṛdaya-sūtra— to the use of the ancient resource of mantric recitation to deconstruct all that can be experienced

Desde tiempos védicos, «las palabras» fueron divinizadas ya que se creía que éstas representaban en total plenitud la realidad, en su nivel más trascendental. Las esperanzas puestas en lo que éstas pudieran significar y los numerosos prodigios metafísicos que se les atribuyeron, fueron objeto de debate también durante la transmisión del budismo por Asia. Las traducciones de los textos Mahāyāna se enfrentaron al antiguo desafío de usar las palabras como medio para transmitir una realidad superior mediante una nueva grafía: los ideogramas chinos. Influenciado por la filosofía śūnyatā 空 de Nāgārjuna 龍樹, este complejo proceso de traducción en el que las ideas podían preceder a los sonidos, derivó —como veremos en el análisis del Prajñāpāramitā-hṛdaya-sūtra— en el uso del antiguo recurso de recitación mántrica para deconstruir todo aquello que puede ser experimentado.
