[EN] This doctoral thesis introduces the development of LiberIC, a cataloging tool that collects, controls, contextualizes, classifies, describes and grants access to representations of books in painting. Following an eminently qualitative, empirical, observational, exploratory, descriptive and analytical methodology, contents have been structured as follows. In the Introductory chapter, the research topic is presented and justified, the research questions are posed, the general and specific objectives are formulated, the methodology used is detailed, the population and the research sample are specified, and the structure of the doctoral thesis is detailed. In addition, the scope of the study and its limitations are identified. Chapter 1 studies the origin and evolution of the book and bookbinding throughout history, from its consolidation as a codex format until the 20th century. Chapter 2 discusses the various methodologies that have traditionally been used to study books and bookbinding. In Chapter 3, the artistic foundations relating to visual language and the study of forms and their meanings in art are established, and the principles of modern iconography are introduced through Erwin Panofsky’s iconological method. In Chapter 4, the conceptual design of the cataloguing model is presented, also providing some basic rules for the creation of the cataloguing records, issues related to the prescribed punctuation, the access points selection, and their writing. Chapter 5 develops a procedural manual that introduces the information areas and description fields that form the backbone of the model, broken down one by one, accompanied by their scope, their typology and various examples that resolve the possible cases that may arise when cataloging an artwork and the book representation it contains. In Chapter 6, a dictionary of iconographic lines is compiled with more than two hundred voices that synthesize the way in which representations of books have been characterized and interpreted according to the historical sources, from the 16th century to the 20th century. In Chapter 7, eight controlled vocabularies are composed to organize the knowledge related to the technique and ornamentation of books based on the descriptive needs of its representation in painting. In Chapter 8, the practical application of the model is carried out through the cataloguing of a research sample of one hundred paintings. This is followed by the Conclusions, which answer the research questions and ratify the fulfillment of the general and specific objectives, and by the Future lines of research, aimed at guiding new research. Finally, the Bibliographical references and sources of information are presented, as well as the Appendices, which gather the complementary material developed as while this thesis was being carried out. | es_ES |
