[EN] Language and Literature are considered core content in Spain’s
Primary Education system, which makes it worth investigating how
they are being taught in the school years and subjects that make up the
corresponding curriculum. The study of how teachers introduce this
content has involved research of an ethnographic nature, which has
gathered information through non-participant direct observation,
among other investigative techniques. A recording has been made of
fifty-one classroom sessions lasting approximately four hours each,
which sixteen primary teachers have taught at five different schools.
This has meant 159.5 hours of recordings, which have been transcribed
and classified through the application of a system of deductive inductive categories created ad hoc for analysing the tasks related to the
teaching of Spanish Language and Literature. This highly detailed and
systematic analysis of how the content is taught has given rise to a
complex data matrix that has permitted the application of sundry
analysis techniques. These have involved not only a description of the
categories identified, but also an analysis of the differences between the
data gathered. The results show that the teachers use tasks to manage
the teaching-learning process, which involves mainly non-ICT
resources. Furthermore, although the teachers use the written language
as mainstream and vehicular content in all the subjects and in all the
years, they seem to overlook the importance that other content merits,
such as the spoken language and literary education. These findings
make a significant contribution to the corpus of knowledge on this topic
as far as they jointly encompass all the dimensions of the teaching of
Language and Literature. This not only enables us to gain an in-depth understanding of classroom practices in this area, as it may also
constitute a key tool for informing the initial training of future teachers
and prompt a discussion among those that are already teaching.
