imperativos socioculturales; como c) la rivalidad especular inmanente a las relaciones sociales;
[EN] This research aims to study the problem of violence in the social theories of Marcel
Mauss and Georges Bataille from a historical-conceptual and deconstructive perspective. Our
goal is to identify the definitions of violence, both explicit and implicit, and to show how
they relate to their social ontologies and to their ways of conceiving the individual subject.
The research will point out that violence is defined in terms a) of social practices that derive
from intracorporal impulses - instincts, drives -; b) or socio-cultural imperatives; and also as
c) the specular rivalry inherent to social relations; d) the experience of the tearing or
existential opening of the individual subject, e) the intrusion of the social into the body, f)
and the ontological fissure of society defined as recursive vortex movement.
Special emphasis will be placed on the metaphor of the whirlwind-society due to two
reasons. Firstly, because, although it can be found, to varying degrees, in the work of both
authors, scholars have generally not placed particular emphasis on it. The social vortex is not
pure dispersion, nor mere composition or disciplining; it is not an aggregate of
intersubjective interactions, or the exposure of bodies to one another, nor is it an exclusively
symbolic structure. Rather, it is a relatively delimited grouop of bodies, objects, practices,
affects and senses that is, by definition, open and constantly penetrated by constitutive
otherness. Secondly, because it is incompatible with the concepts of society and community
proposed in general by modern political philosophy, according to which every
interpenetrating bond is violence and must be eliminated. Mauss and Bataille also consider
intermingling to be violence but, by giving it the status of a structural feature of society as a
whirlwind, they call into question the concept of society as an aggregate of individuals and as
a large-scale individual.
