¿Llevando su hogar? : un análisis del desarrollo de la identidad nacional de los migrantes en la frontera México-Estados Unidos

Abstract

[ES] Los Estados Unidos ha usado la pandemia de COVID-19 para introducir políticas migratorias más estrictas, lo que resulta en una prolongada inmovilidad de los migrantes latinoamericanos en las ciudades fronterizas mexicanas. Estos migrantes se encuentran en una mezcla de distintas culturas, por lo que este trabajo investiga el desarrollo de su identidad nacional durante su migración. Esta investigación analiza un corpus de entrevistas con migrantes centroamericanos en Tijuana, centrándose en los efectos de sus motivaciones migratorias, su actividad transnacional y su presencia en un tercer espacio en el desarrollo de su identidad nacional. Se ha concluido que la identidad nacional de los migrantes se desarrolla hacia una versión polarizada de su identidad nacional original, enfocándose por un lado en una selección subjetiva de los elementos más positivos y por otro lado en los elementos más negativos que motivaron su migración.

[EN] The United States has used the COVID-19 pandemic to introduce stricter immigration policies, resulting in a prolonged immobility of Latin American migrants in Mexican border cities. Because these migrants find themselves in a mix of different cultures, this paper investigates the development of their national identity during their migration process. This research analyses a corpus of interviews with Central American migrants in Tijuana, focusing on the effects of their migratory motivations, their transnational activity, and their presence in a third space on the development of their national identity. The paper concludes that the migrants’ national identity develops towards a polarized version of their original national identity, focusing on the one hand on a subjective selection of the most positive elements and on the other hand on the most negative elements that motivated their migration.

[DU] De Verenigde Staten heeft de COVID-pandemie gebruikt hun immigratiebeleid aan te scherpen, wat heeft geleid tot een langdurige immobiliteit van Latijns-Amerikaanse migranten in Mexicaanse grenssteden. Omdat deze migranten zich in een mix van diverse culturen bevinden, onderzoekt deze thesis de ontwikkeling van hun nationale identiteit tijdens hun migratieproces. Dit onderzoek analyseert een corpus van interviews met Centraal-Amerikaanse migranten in Tijuana, waarbij de focus ligt op de effecten van hun migratiemotieven, hun transnationale activiteit en hun aanwezigheid in een third space op de ontwikkeling van hun nationale identiteit. Het onderzoek concludeert dat de nationale identiteit van de migranten zich ontwikkelt tot een gepolariseerde versie van hun oorspronkelijke nationale identiteit, met enerzijds een subjectieve selectie van de meest positieve elementen en anderzijds de meest negatieve elementen die hun migratie motiveerden.
