[ENG]The increased use of the internet and electronic devices has generated great progress, but it has also been accompanied by numerous mental health drawbacks. Among these we find Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), which is the anxiety generated by the observation of rewarding experiences that other people have and of which we are not a part.
The aim of the present study is to study the level of FoMO in university students and the possible influence of emotional intelligence and personality on its appearance and maintenance. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was carried out, consisting of a sample of 105 university students (81.9% female). Sociodemographic questions, the FoMO questionnaire by Wegmann et al. (2017), the NEO-FFI-R Costa and McCrae (1989) and the Trait Meta-Mood Scale by Salovey et al. (1998) were used in the form. After dissemination and subsequent data collection, data were analysed using the statistical package Jamovi version 2.3.28. To achieve the objectives, descriptive analyses, t-tests, ANOVA, correlation analysis and linear regression were performed. To assess the fit of the FoMO scale model, a confirmatory factor analysis was performed.
The results obtained show that the levels of FoMO of university students are at scores scarcely higher than those found in the Spanish population. It was also found that certain factors can generate vulnerability to present the syndrome, such as: high use of devices and internet, having high neuroticism and possessing a high level of neuroticism. and having low emotional intelligence.
Motivation for academic and work-related use was found to be associated with extraversion and the three dimensions of emotional intelligence. These considerations should be further investigated for their possible implication as a protective factor against FoMO.
