La influencia del poder militar en las relaciones entre España y Japón durante la primera mitad del siglo XX: el caso de Eduardo Herrera de la Rosa

Abstract

[ES] Con esta investigación pretendemos aportar un nuevo enfoque al estudio de las relaciones hispano-japonesas desde la perspectiva del impacto del poder militar y el peso que este estamento tenía tanto en España cono en Japón durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Para ello pondremos especial énfasis en analizar tres conflictos bélicos ocurridos durante este marco temporal y que afectaron al desarrollo de esas relaciones: en primer lugar, la guerra ruso-japonesa, en segundo el expansionismo de Japón en Asia, los problemas derivados en las provincias del noreste de China y el surgimiento del estado títere de Manchukuo, y en tercer y último lugar la Guerra Civil Española. Además de analizar en líneas generales qué significaron estos conflictos para las relaciones hispano-japonesas, también nos centraremos en reconstruir la presencia de Eduardo Herrera de la Rosa en Japón, un militar español que permaneció en aquel país por casi cuatro décadas entre 1908 y 1946, queriendo por ello establecer un ejemplo práctico del poder del estamento militar en esas relaciones y aportar nueva bibliografía de una persona que actualmente está escasamente estudiada. Para ello utilizaremos la consulta de fuentes primarias como nutriente principal de nuestra investigación. Estas estarán compuestas principalmente de documentación de la época custodiada en diferentes archivos, tanto militares como diplomáticos, además de otros medios escritos como por ejemplo la prensa histórica. Finalmente completaremos el presente estudio con una serie de consideraciones extraídas de la lectura y comprensión de los diferentes capítulos que compondrán este trabajo, concluyendo cuál fue el papel del estamento militar en las relaciones hispano-japonesas y cómo los diferentes conflictos afectaron a la política exterior de los países estudiados. [EN] With this research we intend to bring a new approach to the study of Spanish-Japanese relations from the perspective of the impact of military power and the weight that this power had both in Spain and Japan during the first half of the twentieth century. To this end, we will place special emphasis on analyzing three war conflicts that occurred during this time frame and that affected the development of these relations: first, the Russo Japanese war; second, Japan's expansionism in Asia, the problems arising in the northeastern provinces of China and the emergence of the puppet state of Manchukuo; and third and finally, the Spanish Civil War. In addition to analyzing in general terms what these conflicts meant for Spanish Japanese relations, we will also focus on reconstructing the presence of Eduardo Herrera de la Rosa in Japan, a Spanish military officer who remained in that country for almost four decades between 1908 and 1946, thereby establishing a practical example of the power of the military establishment in these relations and providing new bibliography on a person who is currently scarcely studied. For this purpose, we will use the consultation of primary sources as the main source of our research. These will be mainly composed of documentation of the time kept in different archives, both military and diplomatic, as well as other written media such as the historical press. Finally, we will complete this study with a series of considerations drawn from the reading and understanding of the different chapters that make up this work, concluding what was the role of the military establishment in Spanish Japanese relations and how the different conflicts affected the foreign policy of the countries studied.
