Kleists Das Erdbeben in Chili. Eine Studie anhand der religiösen Symbolik

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio de la simbología religiosa en la narración Das Erdbeben in Chili (El terremoto en Chile) del autor Heinrich von Kleist. Simultáneamente a este planteamiento, se presentará y analizará el contexto histórico y filosófico subyacente reflejado en esta obra, con especial atención a las consecuencias ideológicas de la Revolución francesa y al problema de la teodicea, así como la relación de Kleist con la religión, especialmente el catolicismo. Asimismo, se hará mención de otras obras de Kleist y de la correspondencia del autor siempre que sea relevante para el adecuado análisis de la temática religiosa y de las previamente mencionadas manifestaciones del pensamiento ilustrado en el texto en cuestión.

The aim of this paper is the study of religious symbolism in the short story Das Erdbeben in Chili (The Earthquake in Chile) by the author Heinrich von Kleist. Alongside this approach, the underlying historical and philosophical context reflected in this work will be presented and analyzed, paying special attention to the ideological consequences of the French Revolution and the problem of theodicy, as well as Kleist's relationship with religion, especially Catholicism. Other of Kleist's works and the author's correspondence will likewise be mentioned whenever they are of relevance for an adequate analysis of the religious thematic and of the previously mentioned manifestations of enlightened thought in the text in question.
