Are all politicians the same? Ideology as predictor of the severity of military responses in the Israel-Palestine conflict

Abstract

[EN] The influence of ideology on the severity of interstate conflict is relatively underexplored, especially if we take into account the interaction between ideological fractionalization, terrorist attacks, and the use of severe force in the conflict of Israel and Palestine. To explore this topic, I carried out a comparative analysis using the indirect method of difference in the different Israeli government periods in the 21st Century (1999-onwards). The overall results show that ideology plays an important role in the use of severe force, being the presence of left parties a necessary condition to prevent severe attacks by Israel. On the other hand, previous significant Palestinian attacks are always countered with severity by Israeli Armed Forces (sufficient condition), but the use of severe force by Israel is not always preceded by significant Palestinian terrorist attacks (not a necessary condition).
