El Mágreb al-Aqṣà en la obra de Aḥmad Ibn Faḍl Allāh al-ʿUmarī (m. 749/1349)

Abstract

Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik amṣār (Los itinerarios de las miradas en los dominios de las grandes ciudades) fue una extensísima obra escrita por el damasceno Ibn Faḍl Allāh al-ʿUmarī (700-749/1301-1349), en la que combinó la historia y geografía universales, proporcionándole un carácter enciclopédico, propio de la historiografía mameluca. Al-ʿUmarī ofrece una visión detallada y exhaustiva de los espacios y viajes del mundo medieval islámico, proporcionando valiosa información sobre las rutas comerciales, puntos de interés y aspectos culturales de la época. La obra destaca por su meticulosidad en la descripción de las diferentes regiones, así como por su importancia como fuente histórica para comprender las conexiones e interacciones existentes entre ellas. En el presente trabajo, se abordan los pasajes dedicados a la región más occidental del norte de África (al-Maġrib al-Aqṣà), y al sultanato de Fez, ofreciendo la traducción anotada al español de algunos pasajes. Una traducción inexistente hasta la fecha, y que los investigadores sorteaban consultando la edición árabe o las traducciones francesas de F. Fagnan (1924) y, sobre todo, de M. Gaudefroy-Demombines (1927).

Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik amṣār (The itineraries of the glances in the realms of the great cities) was a very extensive work written by the Damascene Ibn Faḍl Allāh al-ʿUmarī (700-749/1301-1349), in which he combined universal history and geography, giving it an encyclopedic character, typical of Mamluk historiography. Al-ʿUmarī offers a detailed and comprehensive overview of the spaces and travels of the medieval Islamic world, providing valuable information on the trade routes, points of interest, and cultural aspects of the period. The work stands out for its meticulousness in describing the different regions, as well as for its importance as a historical source for understanding the connections and interactions that existed between them. In the present work, the passages dedicated to the westernmost region of North Africa (al-Maġrib al-Aqṣà), and to the sultanate of Fez, are addressed, offering the annotated translation into Spanish of some passages. A translation that did not exist to date, and researchers bypassed by consulting the Arabic edition or the French translations of F. Fagnan (1924) and, especially, of M. Gaudefroy-Demombines (1927).
