Sensi «criptati» di una novella esemplare (Decameron iv, 5)

Abstract

The contribution proposes to investigate Giovanni Boccaccio's tale «Lisabetta da Messina», the fifth of the fourth day of the Decameron, one of the best known, due to the tragic-elegious character that connotes it, but also one of the most resistant to an exegesis that would exhaust its depth of meaning and definitively reveal the stratified nature that cloaks it. The elusive character of the tale accentuates the unbroken fascination over the centuries of Boccaccio's masterpiece, the object of multiple critical reinterpretations over time, triggered by the subtle ambiguities aroused by the underlying implicit texts, by the numerous paratexts incorporated or alluded to, especially the classics of the Greek-Latin tradition, or the coeval and earlier medieval references that multiply the possible interpretative approaches, each of which partially unveils the truth, but without ever illuminating it and fully clarifying the ultimate meaning of an exemplary tale.

Il contributo si propone di indagare la novella «Lisabetta da Messina» di Giovanni Boccaccio, la quinta della IV giornata del Decameron, tra le più note, per il carattere tragico-elegiaco che la connota, ma anche tra le più resistenti ad un'esegesi che esaurisca la sua profondità di senso e sciolga in via definitiva la natura stratificata che la ammanta. Il carattere sfuggente della novella accentua il fascino intatto nei secoli del capolavoro novellistico di Boccaccio, oggetto di molteplici riletture critiche nel tempo, scaturite dalle sottili ambiguità suscitate dai testi impliciti sottesi, dai numerosi paratesti inglobati o allusivamente richiamati, soprattutto i classici della tradizione greco-latina, o i rimandi medievali coevi e anteriori che moltiplicano i possibili approcci interpretativi, ognuno dei quali svela parzialmente la verità, ma senza mai illuminarla e chiarire del tutto i sensi ultimi di una novella esemplare.
