The essay considers the nine registers of the diocese of Città di Castello, whose richness and importance were highlighted for the first time by Robert Brentano in 1960. It focuses on the gatherings produced in the thirteenth century, their particular codicological structure, the tradition and internal organization of the texts, and the hypertextual apparatus, intending to shed light on the chronology and how the bishops of Città di Castello implemented their «documentary revolution», starting from the beginning of the thirteenth century. At the same time, a typology of ecclesiastical cartularies is illustrated, presenting forms, editorial methods, and different functions from the cartularies produced in previous centuries and up until well into the twelfth century.
Nel saggio si considerano i nove cartulari del vescovato di Città di Castello, la cui ricchezza e importanza sono state per la prima volta messe in luce da Robert Brentano nel 1960. Esso si focalizza sui fascicoli prodotti nel xiii secolo, sulla loro particolare struttura codicologica, sulla tradizione e organizzazione interna dei testi nonché sull'apparato ipertestuale, con lo scopo di far luce sulla cronologia e le modalità con le quali, a partire dagli inizi del Duecento, i vescovi di Città di Castello attuarono la loro «rivoluzione documentaria», e di illustrare una tipologia di cartulari ecclesiastici diversa dalle compilazioni prodotte nei secoli precedenti e fino al xii inoltrato: nuova nelle forme, nelle modalità redazionali e, soprattutto, nelle funzioni assolte.
