Salutem dicit IIIIviris: las comunidades cívicas con gobiernos cuatorvirales en la Hispania romana

Abstract

[ES] En este trabajo se lleva a cabo una revisión sobre la interpretación de la institución municipal de gobierno del cuatorvirato en las comunidades cívicas de la Hispania romana. Sobre la base de los antecedentes de esta magistratura en Italia y en las provincias, por un lado se estudiará el proceso de implantación y evolución histórica de esta magistratura en los municipios hispanos, tratando de indagar las causas de su establecimiento en lugar del duunvirato estándar. Por otro lado, se analizarán los testimonios epigráficos de cada uno de los cuatorviros hispanos para determinar la naturaleza de su cargo, es decir, si eran magistrados superiores con potestad jurisdicente o magistrados inferiores de rango edilicio. Con el desarrollo de estos dos objetivos principales, será posible definir la existencia de una doble realidad en el cuatorvirato municipal: una magistratura propia de un municipio de constitución cuatorviral; y una magistratura de transición en una ciudad de futuro régimen duunviral. [EN] This paper revisits the interpretation of the historical development of the quattuorvirate in the towns of Roman Spain. On the basis of the history of this magistracy in Italy and in the provinces, on the one hand, the process of establishment and evolution of the quattuorvirate in Spanish municipia will be studied, trying to investigate the causes of its establishment instead of the standard duovirate. On the other hand, the epigraphic attestations of each of the Spanish quattuorviri will be analysed in order to determine the nature of their office, i.e. whether they were high magistrates with jurisdictional power or lower magistrates with aedilician competences. Thanks to these two main objectives, it will be possible to define the existence of a dual reality in the municipal quattuorvirate: the proper magistracy of a quattuorviral municipium, and the transitional magistracy in a town with a future duoviral constitution.
